Summer is almost here, and it’s time to start planning your Memorial Day weekend. Why not plan a Sanibel Island Memorial Day weekend vacation? While there are plenty of things to do on the island and in surrounding communities, Memorial Day on Sanibel Island still offers plenty of opportunities to relax and unwind.
Here are some of our favorite ways to spend the holiday weekend.
If Sanibel Island is known for one thing, it’s for its shelling. Rated among the top places in the U.S. for shelling, Sanibel Island is the place to find unique shells in great condition. Some of the best places to go shelling on Sanibel is Lighthouse Park, Gulfside City Park, Captiva Beach, Bowman's Beach, and Blind Pass Beach. Go at low tide if you can when more shells are exposed.
Fort Myers Cruise
Head out on a 1.5-hour tour along the Caloosahatchee River on Memorial Day. This tour offers the opportunity to view wildlife, like dolphins, bald eagles, and manatees while traversing through mangrove forests. You’ll also learn about the history of Fort Myers and those who used to spend time here, like Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. Tickets are $32.50 for adults and $16 for children three to 12.
The Memorial Day Sidewalk Sale at the Miromar Outlets is a must for any shopping lover. The sidewalk sale is an opportunity to take advantage of already low factory outlet prices. Miromar Outlets is in Estero, about 45 minutes from Sanibel Island, but it’s worth the trek if you have a car to get around. The shopping center has major brand name stores like Adidas, Bloomingdale’s, Fossil, J. Crew, Nike, White House | Black Market, and more.
Sanibel Island features more than 25 miles of bike paths that allow you to explore this beautiful island. Some of the best Sanibel Island bike trails include the Sanibel Causeway, Rabbit Road Trail, and East Gulf Drive. The four-mile wildlife drive loop through the J.N. ‘Ding’ Darling National Wildlife Refuge is among the best places on the Island to explore and see more than 200 species of birds.
Sanibel Island Farmers Market
The Sanibel Island Farmers Market ends its season on Memorial Day weekend and is a great way to spend your Sunday afternoon. Established in 2008, the Sanibel Island Farmers Market is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Pick up local honey, produce, bread, meat, cheese, flowers, and much more. Keep in mind that dogs are not allowed in the market.
