Spring is one of the best times to visit Sanibel Island. The temperatures are warm and it feels like summer is here, even when most of the country is still digging out snow. While the islands can be a bit busy, having your own rental condo or home is the perfect solution to enjoy the beaches, parks, culture, and dining of Sanibel and Captiva islands this time of the year. If you're ready for warm weather, sandy toes, and sunshine, plan a spring vacation with us to Southwest Florida.

Sanibel Island Weather in Spring

The weather on Sanibel Island during the springtime is perfect. It's warm enough to enjoy the beaches but not so hot that you can't be outside without sweating. By early spring, temperatures are in the high 70s to low 80s during the day and the mid-50s at night. During the day you can enjoy the warm sunshine, and by night the cool breeze offers the perfect temperature for a restful evening.

This time of the year is also typically pretty dry. There's only a slight chance of rain during the springtime, so come prepared for the occasional rain shower but it probably won't damper your plans too much.

Things to do on Sanibel Island During Spring

Spring is a great time to visit Sanibel because the mild weather makes it much more enjoyable to spend time outdoors. From biking to wildlife viewing to just relaxing on our beaches, Sanibel is the perfect destination for vacation goers needing some fresh air.

While spring is typically the busy season in southwest Florida, the island never truly feels crowded. Sanibel is a small island with fewer developments than other nearby communities. You'll find wide-open beaches, tranquil walking paths, pristine nature, and more to enjoy.

View Wildlife

The land and water of Sanibel Island are teeming with wildlife. You can spot aquatic birds, alligators, manatees, dolphins, and more throughout the parks and waterways of Sanibel and Captiva islands. Visit the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge or go on an Everglades Adventure for your best chance of seeing Florida wildlife.

Bike Sanibel

Sanibel and Captiva islands are very bike-friendly whether you're just trying to run errands or get a workout. The Wildlife Drive through the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge, the Sanibel Causeway, East Gulf Drive, and the Rabbit Road Trail are three popular bike paths. You can bike through mangrove forests, along the Pine Island Sound, and through Sanibel's beautiful parks.

Get on the Water

While you might not see locals getting in the water this time of the year, for northerners visiting the beach it's more than warm enough to enjoy water activities. Kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, and boating are all great ways to explore the waterways around Sanibel Island. If you're looking for the perfect place to go kayaking or paddleboarding, consider Tarpon Bay, Buck Key, and the Sanibel Causeway area for your water adventure.

If fishing is more your speed, there are many local charters and fishing guides that can show you the way. Going on an excursion with a local company gives you the best chance of catching what's in season. Here are a few of the best local fishing guide companies:

Go Shelling

Sanibel Island is known for its world-class shelling, home to roughly 250 shell species that you can find along the shores. Head out an hour before or after low tide to spots like Blind Pass, Turner Beach, and Lighthouse Beach for your best chance at finding some beautiful, unbroken shells.

Play a Round of Golf

Sanibel Island and the surrounding area are home to several golf courses to practice your swing, whether you're a novice or an experienced golfer. A few of our favorite Sanibel Island golf courses include Sanibel Island Golf Club, South Seas Golf Course, The Dunes Golf & Tennis Club, and The Sanctuary Golf Club. Just off the island, you'll find even more courses to play in nearby Cape Coral, Fort Myers, and Naples.
